Chess in Karlsruhe, from the Rhine to the Black Forest
Around Karlsruhe chess is played above all in clubs. Nearly every town from the Rhine plain and the Kraichgau to the Murg valley and the northern Black Forest has one, meeting on a fixed weekday in an old town hall, a school or a club room. The Schwarzwaldhalle in Karlsruhe hosts the grenke Chess Open; school chess groups and the Hector courses take only their own pupils.

Chess960 around Karlsruhe
Chess960 turns up here in two forms. Some clubs play it on their own evenings: the Schachklub Durlach has run Chess960 tournaments of five rounds at fifteen minutes plus five seconds, in September 2025 and again in September 2026, the Schachfreunde Neureut held a Freestyle club evening on 28 July 2026, and the OSG Baden-Baden played one of its club evening tournaments of 2026 as Freestyle. In Karlsruhe itself the grenke Freestyle Chess Open runs beside the classical grenke Chess Open in the Schwarzwaldhalle, in 2026 from 2 to 6 April.
In Chess960 the pieces on the back rank start in one of 960 shuffled set-ups, drawn before the game, so memorised openings count for little and the play begins at once. On the nights between club evenings, ch960.com offers it online.
Chess960 at the board in the area, with the date its page gives:

- Freestyle (Chess960) club evening of Schachfreunde Neureut with 16 players — Tuesday 28 July 2026
- Freestyle club evening tournament (6th club evening tournament of the year) of OSG Baden-Baden — Thursday 23 July 2026
- grenke Freestyle Chess Open, played with the classical grenke Chess Open in the Schwarzwaldhalle — 2 to 6 April 2026
Order and sources
The guide holds 80 entries, 80 of them current or waiting for a newer dated trace. Clubs come from the schach.in register and the league portal of the Badischer Schachverband, everything else from the clubs’ own sites, the towns’ gazettes, the FIDE rating database, the course lists of the Hector Children’s Academy, school working-group lists and the Volkshochschule programme, all opened on .
Each list opens with the entry whose dated trace is newest; nothing here is scored, ranked or paid for. A detail that no page gives reads “not stated by sources” instead of a guess. What the marks beside every source mean, and where the covered area stops, is set out under how entries get verified.
Missing a club, a course or an open?
Rooms change, school years begin and course terms end, so an entry can fall behind. If a listing is out of date, or a club, course or open in the area is missing, send a short note with a link to a page that shows it.
